After I saw this sock kitty idea on Pinterest I fell in love with it, and I was looking for the opportunity to try this DIY Sock Kitten and share my experience with you.
It all started last Christmas when I decided to teach my children how to play Secret Santa. But for them to feel the full spirit of the Christmas game, I thought it would be more appropriate that the gifts should be purchased at the dollar store to be accessible to them and I don’t even have to say it was the biggest hit in this experience! My Secret Santa was my daughter who loves animals but especially cats and my goal was to find something like that. Luckily, I found something much better: lots of pairs of socks, and given that, I had no doubts about buying and I already knew that I would turn them into a beautiful stuffed animal. And that’s how I got the idea for my Sock Kitten DIY sewing project idea.
Let’s get started: The good news is you don’t need a sewing machine to do this project!
What materials you will need
1 pair of socks
Pen or pencil (that you can mark on the sock)
Scissors Sewing
Thread and needle
Fiberfill (I used anti-allergy filler)
Decorative Eyes (like button type that can be sewn or the type that can be glued)
Decorative ribbon.
Get your socks ready!
Step 1: First and foremost, you need to draw the cat’s body in one sock and the cat’s head on the other sock by making the shapes showing in the pictures below, or you can print the free template DIY Kitten Sock Template. In the same sock that you have sketched the cat’s head-on, use the heel of the sock to draw the tail.
Step 2: Secondly, you will need to cut the pieces following the pencil markings that you have made before.
Time to sew
Step 3: Afterward, you are going to sew and make sure to follow the outline of the markings. I tried to sew on the sewing machine first. Consequently, it didn’t work out very well. So, I continued sewing by hand.
Step 4:
Next, you are going to turn the pieces. Thereupon, you will need to make a small cut as shown in the picture below to rotate the cat’s body. Note that the front part of the body will be the smallest part that is closest to the heel. Then, you will need to mark where the eyes will be fixed on the cat’s head. Furthermore, if you’re going to include a button for the eyes you can sew them up now. However, if you’re going to glue the eyes, you can do it in the end.
Step 5: Subsequently, you may fill the pieces with enough filling to be very fluffy. So, when you are finished, you may sew the openings of the pieces.
Step 6: Last but not least, you can finish by sewing the cat’s head to the body and then the tail. As a suggestion, you can finish the piece with a ribbon tie on the neck.
We did it!
In conclusion, making this kitten is simple and super fun and you can even do it with children. As a matter of fact, they will love to see a simple pair of socks become a toy!
Additionally, I loved doing this project very much, and I hope you did too. In fact, I searched up more sock animal ideas on Pinterest and added them to my board.
